About Us
Our Mission
The AI Procurement Lab (AIPL) builds organizational capacity for procuring AI through research, education, and readiness. We develop best practices, guidance, and tools that foster responsible procurement awareness and knowledge related to high-risk artificial intelligence and automated decision systems (AI/ADS).
Procuring high-risk AI/ADS is not the same as buying traditional IT solutions. While high-risk systems offer many new opportunities and efficiencies, they also pose new risks and liabilities. To practice responsible procurement, deploying new approaches to address this evolving risk landscape is not optional. Through deep research, collaboration, and upskilling, we aim to ensure that procurement procedures and practices appropriately 1) identify, 2) evaluate, 3) mitigate, and 4) monitor AI/ADS opportunities AND risks.
Ultimately, we want organizations to leverage the benefits of AI while protecting society from its potential harms. This is why our approach focuses on human-centered design principles and best-in-class responsible AI standards, policies, guidance, and tools. When individuals and organizations gain the necessary awareness and skills to adapt to the unique requirements involved in procuring AI solutions, we all win.
