The AI Procurement Lab (AIPL) builds AI procurement capacity through research, education, and readiness. We develop best practices, guidance, and tools that foster responsible procurement of high-risk artificial intelligence and automated decision systems (AI/ADS).

Procuring high-risk AI/ADS is not the same as buying traditional IT solutions. While high-risk systems offer many new opportunities and efficiencies, they also pose new risks and liabilities. To practice responsible procurement, we must innovate and improve our approaches in order to address the evolving risk landscape. Through collaboration and upskilling, we aim to ensure that procurement procedures appropriately 1) identify, 2) evaluate, 3) mitigate, and 4) monitor AI/ADS opportunities AND risks.

Ultimately, our core mission is to help organizations build AI procurement capacity to advance responsible procurement practices that leverage the benefits of AI while protecting society from its potential harms. We do this by drawing upon human-centered design principles and applying responsible AI procurement standards, policies, and end-to-end high quality guidance and tools.
